What is UNYA?
UNYA Australia, believing in the purposes and principles of the United Nations, aims to encourage young people to strive towards a greater understanding of global issues, and to educate them about the United Nations' structure, functions and future. Operating as a national network of young volunteers, UNYA Australia is based firmly on a philosophy of best practice youth-for-youth leadership.
UNYA Australia aims to develop students' skills in vital areas such as debating, negotiation, leadership, problem-solving and understanding of international affairs in an accessible and supportive environment. By encouraging young people to discuss and debate important issues amongst their peers and the broader community, UNYA Australia gives voice to the concerns of young people. Ultimately, UNYA Australia plays a dual role as an educational and advocacy body for Australia's young people.
UNYA Australia comprises eight Divisions, one operating in each Australian State and Territory and collectively forming the National Council from which UNYA Australia receives it mandate. UNYA Australia's Divisions, National Executive, National Officers, MDA Convenors and the Directors of its international activities all meet together twice each year. These meetings run for four days preceding UNYA Australia's major national activities. During the Consultation tour, the Youth Representative will be expected to meet with the divisions of UNYA and take part in school visits and educational opportunities.
Members of UNYA Australia's Divisions are individuals aged between 15 and 24, drawn from a broad spectrum of social and political persuasions, occupations, ethnicities, backgrounds and experiences. UNYA Australia offers a correspondingly diverse range of opportunities to its members, and also seeks to facilitate individual initiatives in youth issues, youth engagement and the United Nations.
